Outdoor Education
Working with a group on "thumbnail navigation"--using map, compass, and a careful look at topography to locate one's position at any time.
The Wilderness Education Association (WEA) was founded by outdoor pioneer Paul Petzoldt in the 1970s in order to promote the safe and competent use of our wilderness areas.  Through its affiliates across the country, the WEA offers field-based courses in outdoor leadership.  All of these courses are based on Petzoldt's "18 Point Curriculum" of outdoor competencies.

Through one of the WEA affiliates, The Denali Foundation, I am occasionally able to offer a WEA "Wilderness Steward" course.  This is a 11 to 14 day program, held in Denali State Park, Alaska.  This course is operated in conjunction with the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry as EFB 500 and with Upstate Medical University as PEDS 4656. Credit for either course may be available to participants desiring it.

For 2008, we are planning to run a course from July 12 through July 22.  The course is already heavily subscribed, so contact the Denali foundation for information as soon as possible.

In addition to being an active certifying instructor for the Wilderness Education Association, I am a member of the National Advisory Board of the organization.
